'The difference between the gospel and the blues? One word - baby! Substitute Jesus for baby and you got the blues. Substitute baby for Jesus and you got the gospel.' – Earl Thomas
Earl Thomas is a double-Grammy nominated artist, whose songs have been covered by the likes of Tom Jones, Etta James and Soloman Burke. His contribution to the blues cannot be understated. The Best of Blues Awards called him “one of the most important blues figures of this decade”. His music is a cross-section of old and new blues, funk, and soul, with Thomas’ voice by turns commanding, playful, and powerfully raw.
His band – always the best – are tight, slick and carry a mean punch, which is just as well, because across blues standards and originals, Thomas is the sharpest singer you can hear in 2019 Blues.
So, when Earl Thomas contacted Greig regarding a very special project, there was only going to be one outcome.
After seeing clips of Greig Taylor on Youtube, Earl contacted him and let him know of his admiration for him as a singer and performer. Through this burgeoning relationship came the idea of Earl Thomas and Greig Taylor putting together an ensemble to perform songs from his 2006 Negro spirituals album, Plantation Gospel – and so initially the ‘Celtic Blues and Gospel Ensemble’ was formed for three shows in Edinburgh and then became known as ‘The Gospel According...’ After the three sold-out shows at Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, The Gospel According toured Eastern Europe to Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Five-star reviews, standing ovations and general feel-good vibe prevailed throughout the run of shows. Stay tuned for more exciting news to come in 2019 for The Gospel According...
